Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler spoke at a press conference today. What is the one question the Mayor said he asks himself every day? He said, "I go to bed with that question foremost in my mind, and when I wake up in the morning that's the first question I ask myself". Watch the Video of the Press Conference to find the answer.
The City Council of Emeryville, California Votes to Cancel The Municipal Election to Be Held On November 3, 2020 and Appoint The Nominated Individuals To The City Council Seats.
*Three City Council seats were up for election and although there were no other nominations, this takes away the right to vote from citizens. This could set a precedent that enables City Council members to appoint themselves from now on, or at any time in the future instead of going through an election process where Citizens can vote.
Cancelling the Election also made it unnecessary for the Council Members who were running for re-election to have to do any campaigning or inform voters on what their vision for the City is and what they would like to accomplish as City Council Members. This prevents voters from having any debate on issues or communicating what they feel are issues -things voters would discuss with a person campaigning.
This discourages other people from running for City Council Seats as they would have to campaign, make signs, and knock on doors.
In the video of the meeting, which was a special meeting held on Zoom, with only this one item on the agenda, the Mayor only describes the item as Agenda Item 6.1. He distracts from the agenda by having a vote to adjourn the meeting in honor of a homeless advocate who passed away. After that, the Mayor does not "feel the need to have staff presentation", and says, "I think we all agree we can skip presentation". Participants in the meeting only refer to the Agenda item as "the item".
During the meeting, the Mayor does say there are ex-parte comments from residents, but nothing from residents is read. The only comments are a note from SEIU, a comment from an SEIU person agreeing with the note, and a comment from the Vice Mayor.
*The Mayor is considered a City Council Member. The Mayor was also voting to appoint himself, instead of having the election and not mentioned during the Special Meeting. See ci.emeryville.ca.us/382/Council-Members
