Cherries may seem like a healthy treat for dogs, but they pose significant risks. The pits, stems, and leaves of cherries contain cyanogenic compounds, which can release cyanide when chewed or ingested, leading to cyanide poisoning. Symptoms can include difficulty breathing, red gums, and even seizures. Additionally, cherry pits present a choking hazard and can cause intestinal blockages.

While the flesh itself is not toxic, the risks outweigh the benefits, especially since cherries are high in sugar, which may upset a dog’s stomach. Cherry-flavored products should also be avoided, as they often contain harmful additives.

For a safer alternative, consider fruits like blueberries, apple slices, strawberries, or watermelon (seedless). These offer beneficial nutrients without the dangers associated with cherries. Always consult your veterinarian before introducing new foods to your dog’s diet to ensure their safety and well-being.
