The term "tote," meaning "to carry," dates back to the 17th century. However, the tote bag as we know it gained popularity in the United States during the 1940s. One of the earliest iconic versions was L.L. Bean's Boat and Tote Bag, introduced in 1944. Originally designed for carrying ice and heavy loads, this heavy-duty canvas bag featured reinforced handles and a roomy interior. It soon found favor beyond the industrial market, being embraced by artists, students, and later, the fashion world.
